Halton
Halton comprises the towns of Runcorn and Widnes and the villages of Daresbury, Hale, Preston Brook & Moore. It has a number of regionally significant tourism products including award winning attractions at Norton Priory, Catalyst Science Discovery Centre and The Brindley Arts Centre. Halton holds high profile events such as Creamfields and the North West Vintage Rally and the Stobart Stadium is home to Widnes Vikings Rugby League Club and Everton Reserves.
Daresbury Village is the childhood home of Lewis Carroll and its significant tourism potential is finally being developed with the building of the Lewis Carroll Visitor Centre. Due to open late 2010, it has been greatly assisted by Heritage Lottery Funding. Picturesque Hale Village has thatched cottages and is famous for the legend of John Middleton, ‘The Childe of Hale’ who reputedly grew to 9’ 3”.
Since 2006, Creamfields, the internationally renowned dance festival, which won ‘Tourism Event of the Year’ at TMP’s Tourism awards in 2009, has made its home at Daresbury. Now a two day event, it was recently granted a three year licence by Halton Council to continue at its festival site.
With its miles of meandering waterways, Halton was an ideal venue to successfully host the 2005 National Inland Waterways Festival. The area currently has 12 Green Flags and its acres of open countryside and parks host an inventive programme of activities led by the Council’s Rangers.
